“The Cabonauts” Blast Off at Comic-Con
The Cabonauts, the latest web/mobile series from comedian/writer Hayden Black, just debuted at Comic-Con 2009. The series takes place in 2183, when humans have conquered the stars but still need a way to get to the human outputs scattered across the galaxies. That’s where Cabonauts, Inc. comes
in: taxi cabs to pretty much anywhere you want to go in the universe.
Harry (played by Norm Thoeming) is studying to get his hack license, with Cyril (played by Black) as his instructor. The two fast friends are forced to work together due to the lousy economy. We follow them as they take their passengers–played by well known sci-fi actors and actresses–around the galaxies. That, and each episode also features a music video with original songs.
The Cabonauts‘ big draw at Comic-Con was Star Trek‘s Nichelle Nichols, the original Lt. Uhuru, who will be a series regular. Black says he wrote the role of CJ, the Cabonauts Inc. CEO, with Nichols in mind. At Comic-Con, hundreds of Star Trek fans waited in line to meet Nichols, reports Black.
The Cabonauts trailer (see below) was debuted at the wild Masquerade Ball, attended by 6,000 people. A nice touch–Nichols introduced the trailer, to the loud approval of her fans. Black reports that the trailer was met with “the right amount of laughs and a big cheer at the end–which was cool.”
Even better for nascent Cabonauts fans was the fact that Black got a couple more stars to sign on for a role on the series: John Barrowman, who plays Captain Jack on Dr. Who and Torchwood said he’d love to play a role if his schedule permits (Black got this on tape to prove it) and David H Lawrence who plays Eric Doyle in Heroes revealed that he’ll play a gay space pirate in an upcoming episode.
The Cabonauts is a production of Black’s Evil Global Corp, which launched in 2006 with its flagship series, “Goodnight Burbank.” The comedy – about the people who bring us the news was nominated by the Webby’s as Best Comedy in 2008. In 2007, EGC debuted a second original series, “Abigail’s Teen Diary” about a 13 year old girl who’s afflicted by a (fictional) genetic condition that makes her look like a middle-aged man. A spin-off series, “Goodnight Burbank: Hollywood Report” recently debuted on Babelgum.com. [MobilizedTV wrote about about Abigail's Teen Diary (originally called Abigail's X-Rate Teen Diary) and also about Goodnight Burbank: Hollywood Report.]
