U.S. broadcasters form Mobile500 Alliance for mobile TV

On the heels of the launch of Mobile DTV in mid-2010, a coalition of TV broadcasters have formed the Mobile500 Alliance “to accelerate the availability of mobile digital television, or Mobile DTV, service to consumers nationwide.” At launch time, the coalition comprised 30 broadcast television companies, which collectively own 346 full-power television stations broadcasting in 167 markets.

45 U.S. TV Stations Now Broadcast to Mobile Devices

The Open Mobile Video Coalition, which represents 900 broadcast TV stations, just reported that 45 U.S. TV stations across the nation are now broadcasting to mobile devices. Mobile Digital Television, which was standardized and launched in 2009, is promoted as the ideal “one to many” delivery method that efficiently uses the broadcast station’s existing radio frequency spectrum.

Broadcasters Go Mobile at NAB 2009

OMVC announced that the stations in 22 markets across the country would roll out trials of the ATSC mobile service in 2009. MobilizedTV spoke with ION Media Networks executive vp John Lawson about plans for mobile broadcasting in 2009. He said that a number of station groups have committed to rolling out a commercial mobile product in the last quarter of 2009, although there is no single business plan or model.
