Mobile Video Award at the New Media Film Festival
The New Media Film Festival held its debut event this last weekend. Among the categories was one honoring the best in mobile content. The award went to Amanda Poore, a student of University of Texas professor Bart Weiss, a contributor to MobilizedTV and a teacher of mobile-moviemaking.
“Amanda Poores’ Video Magnet Poetry was shot using her mobile phone,” says Susan Johnston, founder/director of the New Media Film Festival. “It takes the former fad to a new level by interspersing the text magnet of a word and then having a person say the word. In addition, she jumbles the same words to create new
meaning–all of which was done in less than two minutes.”
“Words–how we say them and in what order–makes such a difference, ” continues Johnston. “Utilizing tools that we have and using them in different ways is one way of addressing New Media. This particular piece honored both of our mandates: honoring stories worth telling and using media in new ways.”
Ms. Poore says she came up with the concept for her video in the “Video for the iPhone” class taught by Bart Weiss at the University of Texas at Arlington. “I made this video by running around campus with my classmate, Chris Mangus, and demanding that people say a word of their choosing to Bart’s iPhone,” she explains. “Later I wrote down specific phrases that I wanted them to say and asked individuals to say those words separately. The idea was to get them to say outrageous things without knowing it. The end result was the short, quirky video before you.”
Production took “only a few hours on three separate days to get all the footage” she needed. She says she “spent a while trying to make sentences” out of the footage, and imported it into Final Cut Pro for editing. “Then I added the ‘magnets’ or the words that appear on the screen,” she says, adding that the music was from freeplay.org.
